Expectations of a Ward Camp Director

Before Camp

Maintain a positive attitude and generate excitement among your ward’s YW for camp!
Attend the full week of camp - Tuesday, June 17th - Friday, June 20th.
Attend the meeting for Ward Camp Directors on February 2nd @ 6pm at Saluda Road building in Rock Hill.
If applicable, plan a YW Camp fundraiser under the direction of your Bishop or Branch President. The Stake Presidency encourages wards to steer away from fundraising and for youth to earn funds on their own.
Communicate with the YW and parents how and when to register and pay for camp. Registration is done on this website; it opens April 20th and closes May 18th. Payments must be made through a tithing slip with your ward, mark the “other” category and write “YW Camp”.
Attend Camp Kickoff and communicate with all parents and YW the details of it. Kickoff is on Friday, May 2nd from 7-9 pm at the Saluda Road building in Rock Hill for all young women and their parents.
Work with the YW presidency to determine which leaders will attend YW Camp for the week. We will need 2 leaders per ward and they will need to stay the whole week Tues- Friday.
Plan and complete any assignments given to your ward for camp; such as the Wednesday Night Game Show Skit.
Communicate with your Bishop or Branch President the details of Wednesday, June 18th. Bishops are invited to attend camp for the day. Bishops should plan to arrive at Camp Long between 1:30-2:30pm. They will get to join the young women for waterfront time at 2:30pm and should bring a swimsuit, towel, and change of clothes if needed. After waterfront time and dinner, they will be in charge of leading 45 minutes of ward time, which should include a fun activity, devotional, and treat. They are also invited to stay for the ward game show skits (which are expected to end by 9:30pm).
Make arrangements for rides for all young women in your ward to and from Camp Long. YW will not be allowed to drive to camp or home from camp. YCLs will ride to camp with the Stake on Monday, June 16th, but will need to ride home with their respective wards on Friday, June 20th. Plan to arrive at camp between 9:30-10:00am on Tuesday, June 17th. Plan for drivers to pick girls up from camp at 10am on Friday, June 20th. Communicate with the YW and help them to understand the camp rules, code of conduct, and FSY guidelines as listed on this website under the Code of Conduct tab.

During Camp

Maintain a positive attitude and help the young women do the same.
Accompany campers in your assigned cabin to all activities along with your fellow cabin leaders
Participate in camp activities and encourage the young women to do the same.
Sleep in the cabin with campers you are assigned to
Support the YCLs as they lead activities
Participate in cabin time planned by the head cabin leader
Additional assignments may be given out as camp is planned in more detail.

Wednesday Night Skits/Parodies

On Wednesday, June 18th each ward will present a skit they have prepared before camp. Please send the name of the game show your young women have chosen to Katy Gille or Eva Fisher ASAP.
The vision for these skits is that each ward does a funny skit replicating a popular TV game show. The goal is to allow the ward to work together through an interactive performance and spark creativity, humor, teamwork, and fun amongst the girls. The skits should capture the spirit of the original game show but be adapted in a way that fits girls camp.
Here are some examples:
- Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: you have contestants, a host, and stage crew with girls holding up big posters showing the questions and answers. The contestants could answer camp-related questions like “What is the best way to get a raccoon to leave your cabin?” Or “What is not an appropriate reason to wake up your cabin leader at 3am?” And then the answers have serious ones and funny ones.
- Survivor: contestants compete to see who can survive the week of camp and highlight funny, exaggerated camp struggles. Roles could include a host, contestants, judges, a props team. Challenges: pitching a tent in a hurricane, there’s a spider in the cabin, s’mores cooking challenge.
You are welcome to include the audience, but aren’t expected to put on a full game show for the 150+ people at camp. Some ideas from the YCLs for including the audience were to have signs to hold up that say “applause” or “Oooo” or to have the audience cast a vote through an applause meter.
Bishops and members of the young women's presidencies are invited to join us at camp that day, so feel free to include any adult ward leaders that will be there in your skits.
Plan on your skit taking up 3-5 minutes.

Kick Off Prep

Ward Camp Directors are in charge of communicating the information about Camp Kickoff to their respective wards - especially regarding the changes to the date, time, and location.
All YW, their parents, ward camp directors, and YW presidency members attending camp are invited to attend.
Ward Camp Directors will be assigned to a cabin before camp - you will be contacted by Katy Gille or Eva Fisher about this assignment. At Camp Kickoff, all cabin leaders will be introduced and will have 45 minutes to spend with their respective cabins. The Head Cabin Leaders are in charge of planning that time and may reach out to you for help.

Q: What do I need to do as a Ward Camp Director?

A: Please review the "Responsibilities" tab to the left.

Q: When is the Registration Period?

A: Registration will open April 20th and close by May 18th.

Q: How much does Camp cost?

A: For each Young Woman Camp cost is $125* (including guests).

Q: What happens if a YW signed up for camp but is unable to attend? Are refunds available?

A: Please inform Katy or Eva. Refunds are only available for those who cancel by June 10th.

Q: How do families submit payment, and when is it due?

A: Please instruct families to submit payment to your clerk via a paper tithing slip marked 'Other' and write in YW Camp. Funds submitted online will go directly to Church Headquarters and will not be reallocated to our Stake. We encourage you to require funds to be submitted prior to camp.

Arrivals + Departures

Ward Camp Directors are responsible for ensuring that there is enough room for YW and their gear to get to and from camp. Please plan to transport the YCL's in your ward home from camp on Friday. Young women are not allowed to drive themselves to or from camp. The address to Camp Long is 1201 Roberts Drive, Aiken, SC 29805.

MONDAY, June 16th @ 8:30am

YCLs and Stake Camp Committee members meet at the Saluda Road building. The stake will transport the YCLs to Camp Long (wards will transport them home from camp on Friday).

TUESDAY, June 17th

Wards should plan to arrive at Camp Long between 9:30-10:00 am. The address to Camp Long is 1201 Roberts Drive, Aiken, SC 29805. Ward Camp Directors will designate a time and location to meet in order to get to Camp Long by that time.

FRIDAY, June 20th

Drivers should plan to arrive at Camp Long (1201 Roberts Drive, Aiken, SC 29805) by 10 am to load their cars with the girls' gear. In coordinating rides, remember to account for extra seats for the YCLs on Friday.

Bishop's Time Wednesday Afternoon + Dinner
June 18th

Please connect early with your unit's Bishop/Branch President. It's important to get this on their busy schedule early. The girls really look forward to spending time with their Bishop. If the Bishop is not available, please arrange for a member of the Bishopric to come. The wife of whomever attends is also invited to join us. Members of the young women presidencies are also invited to join us for the day.

Information for Bishops

Bishops should plan to arrive at Camp Long between 1:30-2:30pm.
They will get to join the young women for waterfront time at 2:30pm and should bring a swimsuit, towel, and change of clothes if needed.
We will then enjoy a yummy dinner with our wards.
After waterfront time and dinner, Bishops will be in charge of leading 45 minutes of ward time. This should include a fun activity, devotional, and treat.
Bishops are also invited (and highly encouraged!) to stay for the ward game show skits (which are expected to end by 9:30pm).
